The origin of family names is endlessly interesting. My family name is no different. Of course there are other family
names associated by marriage like my mom's name Bull and her relatives being called Harley. My Dad mother was called Mercer.
The family name of Mosses is traceable to at least the 1790's. According to the 1841 census, my Great, Great, Great Grandfather
was listed as a Tailor originally born in Burnley though in the 19th Century he had moved his family to Liverpool. At 1841,
my Great, Great Grandfather was living with his family in Clayton Sq in Liverpool that is now the entrance to the Wallasey
Tunnel. This is literally about half a mile or a kilometre from the famous Mersey.
My Great, Great Grandfather remained in that general area and made a living as a ShipWright Journeyman. There would have
been enormous amounts of work in the docks though he was not in permanent employment at this time.
My Great Grandfather, also called Edwin was an Able Bodied Seaman though I haven' t yet discovered which ships he served.
He may have ended up on the Mersey Ferry for all I know! He brought up his family up and around the Everton area again
not far from the Mersey.
Grandfather George Mosses lived in Cowl Street now disappeared under what is modern Everton. He was born in 1886 and
following service in the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War 1 he moved to Wallasey when he married Grandmother Mercer. When
my father Stephen William Mosses was born in January 1923, Grandad Mosses was a Lamplighter though I suspect that the incoming
electricity put him out of work.
